Information We Collect
Information You Provide
Account Information - When you sign in with Apple, we may collect your Apple ID user identifier, your name (if you choose to share it), and your email address (if you choose to share it).
Display Information - When you add a Christmas light display, we collect street address and location coordinates, display title and description, operating hours and dates, feature tags, and photos you upload.
Ownership Claims - When you claim a display as its owner, we ask for a verification selfie taken at the display. It is used only by our moderators to confirm the claim, is never shown in the app or on our website, and is deleted once the claim is approved or rejected.
Information Collected Automatically
Location Data - With your permission, we access your device location to show nearby displays.
Usage Data - View counts on displays (anonymised) and favourite displays you save.
How We Use Your Information
We use the collected information to display Christmas light locations on the map, allow you to save favourite displays across your devices, enable you to add and manage your own displays, and prevent abuse through rate limiting.
Data Storage and Sync
Your data is stored using Apple CloudKit for secure sync through Apple's iCloud infrastructure, and local storage for preferences and cached data on your device.
This website keeps a copy of public display information so it can be shown on the web, and runs the AI description feature. It is hosted in Australia.
Data Sharing
We do not sell your personal information.
Display information you submit is visible to all app users. Data syncs through Apple's CloudKit service, subject to Apple's Privacy Policy.
AI description suggestions - If you use the AI description feature, the details you've typed into that form (title, description, suburb, features, dates and hours) are sent to a third-party AI provider (OpenAI or Anthropic) to write the suggestion. Your name, email and street address are not sent.
Photo Privacy
All photos uploaded through the app have EXIF metadata automatically stripped before upload. Only the image itself is stored, with no hidden location data.
Your Rights
You have the right to access your data within the app, update your display information at any time, delete your account and associated data through the app settings, and access your data on any of your Apple devices via iCloud sync.
Children's Privacy
Aussie Christmas Lights is a family-friendly app rated 4+. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
Security
We implement appropriate security measures including secure authentication via Sign in with Apple, server-side validation, input sanitisation, and encrypted data transmission via Apple's CloudKit.
